Update: Rashid Rehman advocate Supreme Court and former SPARC Chairman and current active SPARC Board member just murdered in Multan. His fault: he was defending a person who was accused of blasphemy on Facebook. He was constantly warning about it.
SPARC strongly condemns the threats being made to leading human rights activist, lawyer and a member of SPARC’s Board of Directors, Rashid Rehman.
Advocate Rashid Rehman has come under attack and received death threats due to the fact that he is currently the legal counsel for a Christian man accused of blasphemy. During a hearing of his client’s case on April 9 in a courtroom in Multan Central Jail, a threat was made to Mr. Rehman’s life. Though Mr. Rehman immediately lodged a verbal complaint before the judge, the judge reportedly remained silent.
Mr. Rehman has sought remedial action from the Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umer Atta Bandial, Supreme Court Bar Association and police authorities after he received the death threats.
SPARC demands that the individuals responsible for the death threats be immediately dealt with under the law, and the police take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the defense lawyer, and uphold the due process of the law.
