Poverty
In Pakistan, the worst sufferers of poverty are children as they are the ones most susceptible due to the prevailing culture in the country. Children are trapped in the clutches of poverty and pushed into drugs, prostitution, trafficking and labor.
Children work to supplement the income of their families. Often from a household with an addict father, too many brothers and sisters or a mother as the caretaker of the whole family, these children miss on education and are prone to serious health problems. Due to poverty alone, there is immense child labor in urban and rural areas and many children end up in hazardous forms of labor. The prospect of these children leaving work is a source of anxiety for the family; as it means suffering due to the loss of the child’s income.
Child Labor as a Cause of Poverty
While poverty may push a child out of the classroom and into the workforce, child labor is also a cause of poverty. For as long as the children are working and not able to receive a quality education, the family will not be able to escape the cycle of poverty. Child laborers hold positions that could be held by adult workers and enable them to support their families and send their children to school. Child labor also lowers the wages adult workers can expect to receive for their work. Uneducated children do not develop to their full potential, resulting in an underdeveloped population/workforce and a nation that will continue to lag on all development fronts, including economic.
