Signs of Child Abuse
PHYSICAL
- Unexplained recurrent injuries or burns
- Improbable excuses for injuries
- Fear of touching or becoming panicky when approached
- Self destructive behavior
- Aggression towards others
SEXUAL
- Any allegation made by a child concerning sexual
abuse
- Being overly affectionate in a sexual way inappropriate
to the child’s age
- Drawing sexual explicit pictures
- Child who is sexually provocative and/or seductive
with adults
- Personality changes such as becoming insecure
or clingy
- Regressing to younger behavior patterns such
as thumb sucking or bringing out discarded toys
- Loss of appetite
- Inability to concentrate
- Lack of trust or fear of someone they know well
EMOTIONAL ABUSE
- Continual self deprecation [such as “I’m
stupid / worthless”]
- Extreme fear of any new situation
- Neurotic behavior [rocking, hair twisting, self
mutilation]
- Extremes of passivity or aggression
- Sudden speech disorders
- Eating difficulties
NEGLECT
- Constant hunger
- Poor personal hygiene
- Constant tiredness
- Poor state of clothing or inappropriate clothes
for the weather
- Untreated medical problems
