Founding Principles of Children’s Parliament of Pakistan (CPP)
The Children’s Parliament of Pakistan (CPP) is founded on principles and objectives that represent the core values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and defines the work of the CPP.
Every child has a right to express his/her views, obtain information, share ideas or information
Every child’s opinion must be taken into account in any matter or procedure affecting the child.
- Every child has the right to associations.
- Every child has a right to live without experiencing prejudice, exclusion and discrimination.
- All actions concerning the child should take full account of his or her best interests.
- Pakistan’s government has a duty to support, promote and amend legislation that reflect and implement the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- Politicians, political parties and political groups are duty bound to prioritize children’s rights in their manifestos and programs.
Objectives of the Children’s Parliament of Pakistan (CPP)
- Provide children with a platform to promote the rights and needs of children through active participation of children nationally and regionally.
- Introduce and inculcate culture of Democratic values among children.
- Promote Civic education and values among children
Structure of the Children’s Parliament of Pakistan (CPP)
The CPP has two assemblies: National Assembly and Regional (Provincial) Assembly
A. National Assembly
National Assembly comprises children who are elected from regional assemblies. The National Assembly comprises Prime-Minister, Speaker, Ministers and Parliamentary Committees. The tenure of each assembly is one year.
B. Regional Assembly
Children elected from each school in the respective district will be qualified to become members of the Regional Assembly for one year.
Criteria for Membership
- A child between 12 and17 years.
- A child who is currently attending a school which is registered with the secretariat of Children’s Parliament.
- A child who can travel to attend meetings and participate in activities within and outside the province.
- Written permission from the parents/ guardians for attending any meetings/ activities.
How Schools can register themselves with the CPP Secretariat?
Schools must fulfill the given criteria to participate in the CPP and fill out the following application form:
The School must have “Child Rights Club”.
The participating school will have to provide SPARC Secretariat with the list of nominated students, and hold elections within the given time-frame. The CPP secretariat may facilitate internal elections, if requested. The schools will then provide with the list of elected candidates to the secretariat.
The School must adhere to the SPARC’s Child Protection Policy which deals with the protection of children during travel and out of schools activities.
