:: Feb 26, 2007 :: Teenage girl lost by father in gamble, and family continue facing threats. Cops were deployed at the residence of teenage girl Rasheeda Omrani in Zeal Pak Colony whose father lost her in a gamble some 15 years ago when she was just one year old, in view of any possible attack from the accused persons. Moreover, police could not arrest the bet-winner Lal son of Ali Haider, his young son Ghani for whom he wanted the girl's custody to have her marry with him and their 8 relatives against whom a case was registered at Site police station on Monday on charges of murder threats and breach of peace. Police said they are conducting raids to track down the accused persons. The family said they are still living under threat and wanted the government arrest the accused persons immediately. :: Feb 25, 2007 :: Eight armed men broke into a man’s house early on Saturday morning in Ghulam Ali Khuhawar village, and gang raped his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law. Sheroo Bagri said that the men broke into his house at around 2am, and raped his wife Naseeba, 14-year-old daughter Shabi and 18-year-old daughter-in-law Sonari. Police have lodged a first information report under Section 11/16 of the Zina and Hudood Ordinance against Rajab Khuhawar, Rashid Jagirani, Soomar Jagirani and the five other unidentified men, but no arrests have been made yet. Complainant Sheroo Bagri told PPI that the men were influentials of the area who had previously abused women of his family. (Larkana) |

:: Feb 24, 2007 :: Five private English medium schools providing co-education remained closed in the city on Friday after law enforcing agencies advised their management to make security arrangements for themselves. The institutions are in the grip of rumours that suicide bombers may target private schools that provide co-education. The five educational institutions – the City School, Peshawar Grammar School, Frontier Education Foundation, four branches of the Beacon House School in various parts of the city and a branch of Bloomfield School in the University Town. Daily Times :: Feb 24, 2007 :: At least 141 high schools in Rawalpindi district, out of a total of 226, do not have permanent headmasters or headmistresses and the Rawalpindi education department has failed to fill the seats. There are currently 102 boys and 39 girls high schools in Rawalpindi district functioning without school principals. Parents of students in such schools have expressed concern over the situation and demanded that authorities concerned hire more staff for the schools. |

:: Feb 21, 2007 :: The Senate’s Standing Committee on Women Development has suggested a seven to 10 year imprisonment in Vanni cases and has called for making it a non-bailable and a non-compoundable offence. The committee, chaired by Senator Tahira Latif, met at the Parliament House to discuss and review recommendations given by the sub-committee on inheritance laws and on immoral practices such as vanni and sawara. Daily Times :: Feb 02, 2007 :: More and more children are being admitted to local hospitals with a condition called Croup or Laryngitis, a type of upper respiratory infection, which, if not properly attended to in time, could be fatal. Paediatricians told APP that the ailment's symptoms are a sudden onset of coughing followed by hoarseness, fever and difficulty breathing in the infected child. Dr Mobina Agboatwala of the Civil Hospital's Paediatrics Department said that the symptoms should be taken as a warning sign and the child should be referred to a qualified doctor. If a doctor cannot be contacted then steam inhalation should be used on the child. |

| Daily News :: Feb 01, 2007 :: Sindh Chief Secretary Fazal-ur-Rehman has directed the officials of labor, transport, industry, commerce and home department to evolve a system to check the working of the brick kilns in the province. The chief secretary has also directed for streamlining the process if the registration of the brick kiln and check on the overall working environment there, besides keeping the record of the laborers so that the practice of bonded labor in the industry could be eliminated. The directives asks the labour and the home secretaries to send monthly reports to him about the working of brick kilns and certify that there was no case of bonded labor. |
