According to a press release issued by the interior ministry, President Musharraf, by exercising his prerogative under Article 45 of the Constitution, has granted a remission of 90 days to prisoners convicted of life imprisonment except those convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, zina, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction or terrorism.
A special remission of 45 days has also been given to all other convicts except those convicted in the above crimes. There will be total remission for male and female prisoners who are 65 and 60 years of age, or above, respectively, and have undergone at least one third of their substantive sentence, except those convicted of homicide or terrorism.
The president has announced a special remission of one year to female prisoners who have accompanying children and are serving the imprisonment sentence for the crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorism. He has also announced remission to juvenile convicts (under 18 years of age) who have served one third of their substantive sentences.
The order of remission applies to all prisoners convicted on or before March 22, 2007. The interior ministry has requested provinces to report the exact number of the eligible inmates within one week. (Islamabad) |
