Students Used as Servants by Teachers
Parents of students in the upper Chitral Valley alleged that the government schools located in their areas have turned into “child labor camps” as teachers take children to their homes for domestic chores and even hire them out to their friends and relatives. Students are being used as domestic servants in teacher's homes as well as working at construction sites, and in the fields.
A report on November 30, said that school children were also being used to clean offices and other parts of the school buildings daily, despite the presence of staff for this work. The parents complained that on the one hand the government claimed to have formulated strategies for increased enrolment while on the other hand it has done little to check corporal punishment and student's vulnerability to physical harm because of the work being done by the children during school hours. In October, a student of grade six fell into the Yakhoon River while helping in the construction of a suspension bridge. He was saved by a passer by.¦
